Roger Kulstad
I just learned of Arlan's passing. I met him in the Dominican Republic while studying a family with anterior hypopituitarism. We rode in a truck to the remote town of Cañafistol to meet the patients. We enjoyed meeting them, learning their stories and collecting blood samples. The centrifuge broke and I fixed it. At the time, it seemed like an interesting adventure. Little did I know we had discovered a new disease.
We reunited in New Orleans for the Endocrine Society meeting. He and his team presented the paper. I was just a student but felt honored just to be there. The experience, and his passion for endocrinology was infectious and ultimately sealed my decision to pursue this medical specialty.
We met again on the mountains of Hispaniola, where, alongside University of Florida students, we provided medical care for people in need.
Years later I told him I was going to the Marshfield Clinic for residency training. He was so encouraging that I made the right decision to go there.
Throughout my career, he gave me encouragement, inspiration and advice.
I have so much to thank him for.
My deepest sympathies to Edith, who was always sweet, kind and welcoming to me.
