Chuck gave me a ton of support when I was financed the Wildlife Conservation Society and I will always be gratefull. He came to see me in the Colombian Amazon and when he realized he would have to travel in my broken-down canoe with his expensive camera equipment he went back to New York and financed a wonderful Brazilian aluminum canoe and a new motor. It took me a long time to write my memoirs about Caparú, my research station where I lived for 18 years, "Monkey Memoirs: Wild Life in an Amazon Wilderness" and since it has just been published I am sad to say that Chuck never had the chance to read it. I do hope he saw my other books, though, about Colombian primates and tropical mammalian evolution. Thanks, Chuck, for everything you did to support me.

Dear Gail, Jenny, Jonathan, and Don Chuck's siblings and extended family, I send my deepest condolences to you. It hit me hard to hear of Don Chuck's passing, and I know he will be dearly missed by all of you and all who knew him and love him.

I wrote the below poem for Don Chuck on April 7, 2001, when he and Don Jim Barborak were my bosses at WCS MesoAmerica Program. It was shortly before I moved away to take a job in DC. It was a pleasure to go to the office every morning with the crew. Don Chuck always had a way of cheering people with his warmth and sense of humor, his easy laugh, and the sparkle in his eye knowing he'd said something clever that would soon have the person or the office in stiches.

Here is the poem.

DON ARCHIE, DON CHUCK

Don Archie, Don Chuck,
Head of WCS Gainesville,
He’s a real busy man,
he rarely sits still.

Camping in Venezuela,
or hiking ruinas in Copán,
his presence is always here,
but he’s often gone.

Charming the locals,
Just as cool as you please,
Always easy and relaxed,
And settin’ folk at ease.

Not just a boss,
but amiable and fun,
being in his presence
is like a day in the sun.

Fiscally responsible,
always good for a laugh,
regularly checkin’ in on AOL
and his staff.

A surprisingly great dancer,
On the Bronx Zoo jefe board,
A real Southern gentleman,
Internationally adored.

I am grateful for the circumstances
That brought us together,
I will cherish you and the WCS gang
in my full heart forever.

My deepest condolences to Gail and the Carr family. My late husband John and I enjoyed helping Chuck adapt to life at WCS and in New York City. He always brought a fresh perspective and sense of humor to all of his endeavors. He will be greatly missed.

Chuck was a force, in the most fun and approachable way. What a legacy of conservation and conservationists he created! I was on the design staff at the Bronx Zoo and we got to work with Chuck and the Carr family in Tortuguero, then I worked with him and others in Belize and Guatemala. Such a kind and wonderful person who was truly interested in helping people find their path in conservation. My deepest condolences to the Carr family.

Chuck, my boss for 15 years at WCS, was a mentor and an inspiration to me and to countless other indivduals and organizations that he supported. He was an exemplary conservationist who had a major impact on wildlife conservation, conservation biology, protected area management, landscape and seascape conservation and nature-based tourism in Mesoamerica. My wife Damaris and I and our family would like to express our sincere condolences to Gail, Jenny, Jonathan, and to Chuck's siblings and extended family.

Chuck was a guiding force in our lives for more than 20 years. He did much more than oversee our conservation projects in Belize, although he was certainly wonderful at sharing the big conservation picture in Mesoamerica. He was a good friend too and up for anything, always ready to step in when help was needed, always ready to go, see, do. We spent many unforgettable evenings at Chan Chich Lodge, plotting our next moves, saving the world and sharing more than a few laughs. We miss those years and miss Chuck. Our sincere condolences to his family.

Cannot think of anyone more influential and succesful in terms of leaving a lasting impact on conservation efforts in Mesoamerica. My wife and I met while working for WCS in 1999, among the many young idealists that Chuck & Co. recruited in the ongoing effort to establish an alternative, sustainable vision in the region. Countless projects big and small, never mind government Ministries down to the most hyperlocal level, owe their existence to the persistence and into-the-face-of-the-storm optimism of ‘Don Chuck’. Heck, one could even credit him for giving us the opportunity to create a life for our beautiful daughter, already an animal lover in her own right and assuredly a conservationist in training. The challenge remains, more than ever before, and the baton will be securely passed as long as the next generation steps up the way he did. Our most sincere condolences to the Carr clan.
