Alexis Katherine Posey's Obituary
Alexis Katherine Posey, 46, died Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at the Hospice Care Center, after many years of illness and struggle.
Born January 18, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio, Alexis grew up in Gainesville from age 8, attending JJ Finley, GHS and earning an AA degree from SFCC in 1993.
Irrepressible, Alexis was a natural actor who at 13, played Mayella in the GCP production of To Kill a Mockingbird. Later, following brain injury and physical disability, she auditioned and was accepted into the UF Theater program. She loved music and knew lyrics to countless songs, favoring the Indigo Girls. She befriended cats, fed neighborhood strays on threat of eviction, and during recent hospitalizations, worried about her pet, Mitzi. Local and online AA support groups were her lifeline.
Alexis is survived by her parents, Joann and Gary Ihas of Gainesville and her younger brother, Benjamin Ihas (Kala-Lee), of Boulder, CO. Preceding her in death were her father, Frederick Posey and her beloved older brother, Nicholas (Nick) Posey.
The family thanks Haven Hospice caregivers and volunteers heartily for their compassionate, meticulous care of Alexis before and during her stay in the Care Center. Profound gratitude goes to her longtime doctors, specifically to Ahsan Ejaz, MD and Sarah Frazier, MD; to innumerably kind people who extended help to Alexis over the years; to her AA and other friends who never gave up on her.
