I had the honor of having Dr. Green on my PhD Committee. He taught me the value of multidisciplinary approaches to explore practical solutions to complex issues. He lead with grace and empathy. He inspired many researchers in the field of bioenergy.
I worked for Dr. Green as a draftsman while I attended the University of Florida. I did the graphic work for his book, The Nuclear Independent Particle Model. My name is included in the Acknowledgments. When Dr. Green gave me a copy of his book, he wrote a personal note inside. He said, “To Roger, an artist in performance and temperament.” I still have the book. He always thought I was smarter than I was, and I think his great expectations greatly affected my life. I will always be grateful for his incredible patience and kindness.
Our family knew Dr. Green in a very special way. We lived next door to the Greens from 1964-66. Our children were friends with their children. Freddie and I shared the usual homemaker stories. A very special memory comes to mind when the men of both families gathered on the front lawns to track a lunar eclipse. Dr. Green calculated the movement degree by degree. As I read about his impressive accomplishments, I remembered his humble and courteous personality. His daily commute to do his research at the University of Florida on his bicycle was so typical of his ability to enjoy life in big and little experiences. He gave so much in his ninety-five years to make the world a better place in which to live. Our lives were enriched by having known this professor and his wonderful family.

As a younger, less-experienced, and less-knowledgeable colleague of Prof. Green, I have a tremendous respect for him and thankfulness for the knowledge he shared with me. He was truly a great scientist and engineer, as well as a great person. He made a true impact in the world through his teaching and research. I am very sorry to hear that this world has lost him.
I first met Dr. Green, in the mid 70's at his weekend visits to his son Bruce's place in Micanopy. Alex was fond of driving the old tractor, working with Bruce on various projects and no doubt keeping an eye on what we were all up to out there. He and Freda came for group/family get together's there and later I went to some family events at their home in Gainesville. I much admired Alex not only for his professional accomplishments but for his expression of his enjoyment for the good life he was living and appreciation and care for his family. Oebm Bendrah
