Albert B. Miller's Obituary
Albert B. (“Bert”) Miller, age 90, formerly of Sugar Mill Woods, Homosassa Springs, Florida and Oak Hammock, Gainesville, Florida passed away Friday, May 2, 2014, while residing at the memory care unit of Elmcroft at Roswell, Georgia.
Bert was born June 21, 1923 in New York City, New York to Frank and Lillian Miller.
Bert was attending Cornell University when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served as a commissioned officer on a ship in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII. While in the Navy, Bert met and married his wife, Alice M. Hauger, who was then a Marine. Bert and Alice had celebrated 68 years of marriage when Alice passed away in November 2012.
After WWII, Bert returned to Cornell and completed his undergraduate degree. He then served a tour of duty as a Foreign Service officer in Thessaloniki, Greece, and traveled extensively throughout Europe and other parts of the world with Alice and their daughter Kerry.
Upon his return to the United States, Bert joined Medical Economics, Inc., a publisher of books and magazines for the medical profession, which was in the early stages of producing an annual compilation of manufacturers' prescribing information on prescription drugs for physicians. Bert was assigned responsibility for this publication, known as “Physicians’ Desk Reference” (PDR), and expanded this publication to become the definitive reference source for legally mandated information relevant to writing prescriptions relied upon by physicians and other medical specialists. Bert was so integrally involved with this publication at Medical Economics that he was known as “Mr. PDR.” This resource is still relied upon and used extensively by the medical profession.
Bert is survived by his daughter, Kerry Miller Bartlett of Marietta, Georgia; 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
One of his great grandchildren, Gavin Bartlett, has cystic fibrosis, and in lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in memory of his great grandfather to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation via Gavin's page at http://fightcf.cff.org/site/TR/GreatStrides/40_Georgia_Atlanta?px=1075390&pg=personal&fr_id=2047.
A Celebration of Life ceremony for Bert will be held Friday, May 23, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., at Oak Hammock, 5100 S.W. 25th Blvd., Gainesville, Florida 32608. Interment will follow in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida at 1:30 p.m.
