Albert Elton Hughes, Jr.'s Obituary
Mr. Albert Elton Hughes, Jr., 62, resident of Gainesville, former soldier, scoutmaster, and “turn signal aficionado”, died Thursday, September 18, 2014, in the Haven Hospice Care Center, following a long illness.
Mr. Hughes was born on August 30, 1952 to the late Colonel Albert Elton, Sr., and Rosemary Hughes in Birmingham, Alabama. He joined the Army at a young age, serving until his retirement in 1974, and moving to Gainesville. Mr. Hughes worked in the manufacturing industry in Gainesville, served as a scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troops, # 164 and #416, and coached youth baseball in Newberry. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and was a member of C. O. B. B. One of Mr. Hughes’ loves was his dogs.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Danny & Joy Hughes, of Gainesville, and Zackary & Kathy Hughes, of Ocala; his longtime spouse, and mother of his children, Valerie Skurka-Mountjoy, of Alachua; two sisters, Virginia Moore, of Birmingham, AL and Marianne English, of Tuscaloosa, AL and three granddaughters, Chloe, Sydney and Hailey.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 2:00 P. M., in the Chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 NW 143rd St., In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Second Chance Rescue and Rehoming at: www.secondchancerescueandrehoming.org, providing companion dogs for veterans returning home from active duty.
