Schirmer was one of my oldest Army buddies. He was truly a special person, and the world sucks a little more without him. Truly devastated by this discovery, but I'm focusing on all the good memories. I miss him so much.

I taught Matthew during his senior year at West Point, a class called Officership. He was not incredibly active in class and was more prone to deliberate and thoughtful contribution rather than more regular and superficial ones. When he did share his ideas in class, they were insightful and I think indicative of the type of officer his Soldiers could expect: disciplined and intelligent. As instructors, we do the best we can to steward the profession by preparing our Cadets for an uncertain, volatile, and dangerous future. In working with Cadets just like Matthew, it's hard to be anything other than deeply inspired by their desire to serve, especially in today's world. I'm saddened by Matthew's passing but am grateful to have met him and even briefly been part of his service to our nation. Well done, Matthew. Be thou at peace.
My wife and I had the great pleasure of meeting Matty while he was staying at our house with my son and fellow cadets during a weekend break from West Point. Matty was a quiet and gentle soul. My son would talk about Matty and their days at West Point and all the fun times they shared. He will be greatly missed… May he rest in peace.
Iaon and I knew Matthew for many years, both as a person and through stories told by his father. We treasure the commemorative medallion we received when he graduated from West Point. He will be sorely missed.
