Michael Yates Nunnery

Michael Yates Nunnery, Gainesville, Florida, passed away on July 13, 2021, at Hunter's Crossing Place Memory Care. Born September 28, 1929, in Benton County, Tennessee. Mike was the only child of Mary Edith and Joel Nunnery. He grew up in Camden, Tennessee, and graduated from Camden High School. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Austin Peay State University and Masters's degree from North Carolina State University, Mike earned his Doctorate of Education Administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. A University of Florida Professor Emeritus, Mike began his 40-year career in education as a 19-year-old teacher in a one-room school and became a rural school principal at the age of 22. A former Marine Corps Captain, Mike was on active duty for over four years during the Korean War era. Mike was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Ann Beddingfield of Millbrook, North Carolina; his son, Douglas Joel Nunnery (Ashlen), St. Johns, Florida; his daughter, Marianna Nunnery Whitley (David), Gainesville, Florida; grandsons, Joel Nunnery (Lauren) and Alex Nunnery; and granddaughters, Elli and Grace Whitley. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 21 at 11 a.m. at Williams-Thomas Westarea Funeral Home, 823 NW 143rd Street, Newberry, Florida.
