Joseph Francis Lowenstein, 88, died on March 26 after a brief illness. Born in The Bronx, New York in 1933, Joseph overcame many challenges in his childhood to become a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a respected member of his community. He worked for Bendix Corporation in New Jersey for many years and was a real estate broker in New Jersey and Florida. Joe was a proud Navy veteran, serving in southeast Asia during the Korean War, 1952-1955 on the USS Benham and the USS Chauncey. He married Doris Marsh in 1954, and together they raised their four children, first in New Jersey then in Florida after moving to Coral Springs, FL in 1975. They settled in Gainesville in 1986 where he worked until retirement. Joe was an active member of Westside Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School sang in the choir, and made many long-lasting friendships. Joe earned an Associate of Arts degree later in life and he always had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He was a voracious reader and had a vast collection of books on a variety of areas of study including politics, history, philosophy, and religion. Joe loved to discuss a broad range of topics with family, friends, and even casual acquaintances. He enjoyed getting together every summer at extended family reunions in St. Augustine as well as many trips to visit his sons’ families out of state. He enjoyed woodworking after retirement and had a vast collection of furniture, wood carvings, and toys he made for his grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Linda Lowenstein, daughter-in-law Denise Schaney Lowenstein, brother Jerry Jeronen, and sister Janet Jeronen. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Doris Lowenstein, his sons, Kenneth (Marion), Joseph, and Richard (Susan), his grandchildren Diana, Damon, Stacey, Justin, Kate and Caroline, and great-grandson Collin. The family will receive friends, Thursday, April 1, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main St. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, April 2, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Westside Baptist Church 10000 West Newberry Road, with Dr. David Chauncey officiating.
