Dr. Hal Gene Bingham

Dr. Hal Gene Bingham, M.D., age 93, of Gainesville, FL passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at Oak Hammock. Dr. Bingham was born October 22, 1925 to James Joseph and Josie Neta Denton Bingham at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, KS. He became an Eagle Scout in 1940 in Anthony, KS where he grew up. From 1943-1946, Dr. Bingham served as a Private 1st Class in the 100th Division of the U.S. Army. Later, he wrote a book about his experiences as a foot soldier in France and Germany during World War II. In 1948, Hal married nurse Mary Ann Beal, R.N., from Harper, KS. They had five children. Dr. Bingham graduated from the Medical School at Kansas University in 1954. He then served as a medical doctor at Madigan Army Hospital for one year in Tacoma, WA and in the U.S. Air Force as a captain for two years in Maine. Residencies were taken at the University of Iowa and the University of Kansas in General Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He joined the faculty at the University of Missouri in 1962 where he started plastic surgery programs and trained three residents. In 1964, he began a private practice in Tulsa, OK. He returned to the University of Missouri Medical Center in 1966. In 1972, he joined the faculty of the University of Florida as Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Director of the Burn Unit at Shands Teaching Hospital. He trained 42 residents in his specialty before he retired in 1996. Dr. Bingham also served at the Veteran’s Administration Hospitals in Iowa City, IA, Columbia, MO, and Gainesville, FL until he was 80 years old. Dr. Bingham enjoyed playing the clarinet in the Gainesville Community Band and with the Docs of Dixieland for many years. His sons followed him in the music profession, and his daughters followed their mother in the nursing field. He and his wife were long-time members of Trinity United Methodist Church. Dr. Bingham was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Beal Bingham in 2005, and a granddaughter, Candace in 2019. He is survived by his children Steven Lee (Trudy), Catherine Jo Bingham-Borde, Lynn Ann Bingham-Cox (Emory), Mary Shaun Bingham-Dindial (Hans), and John Eric; eight grandchildren, Ceri, Rachael, Marissa, Jace, Martin, Austin, Nathan, and Jacob. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 4:00PM, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 4000 NW 53rd Ave. Gainesville, FL 32653 in the Worship Center with Dr. Dan G. Johnson, Rev. Catherine Fluck Price, and Rev. Steve Price officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Family will receive friends Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 NW 143rd Street, Newberry. Dr. Bingham will be buried in the Anthony Cemetery in Anthony, KS Tuesday, October 8, 2019 with military honors.
