Eugene Ned Schreiber

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Mr. Eugene “Gene” Schreiber, age 88, passed away peacefully on March 22nd at his home. The middle son born to the late Ned J. Schreiber and Lydia Schraufnagel Schreiber of Tomahawk Wisconsin, graduated from Tomahawk High School where he was a three-sport letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Gunner’s mate from 1953-1956. He married his wife, Georgia M. Henderson, his high school sweetheart and friend since third grade, on December 1,1956 and they shared their married lives together for 67 years. Gene completed his B.S. at the University of Michigan with a degree in Forestry. Upon his graduation he received a job offer from Owens Illinois Paper Company and moved his family to Florida. During his career he worked with the UF School of Forest Resources and Conservation along with the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program. He enjoyed being a mentor to the young foresters and many long-term friendships developed. After several promotions, relocations, and company name changes, he retired in 2000 with 36 years of dedicated service. Gene was an avid outdoorsman all his life. He loved hunting and fishing, passing down this love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He had many hunting adventures outside the state but his favorite hunting spots were at his son’s homes in Oklahoma and White Springs-- hunting with his family. When hunting season was over he would say “I’m going to Suwannee”, where he would fish for reds, trout, yellow tail or “anything that was biting”. He entertained many friends and family members down at his cabin sharing his secret fishing holes along with all the fishing stories. Gene was a first generation college graduate and felt that one of his greatest accomplishments was instilling in his children and grandchildren that education was a must and he helped (with the “Big Gene” push) to encourage his 4 children and 9 grandchildren to all graduate from college; there’s a total of 13 Bachelor degrees, 6 Masters Degrees, one Doctorate of Medicine, one appointment to the National Mensa Society, and many Deans lists, professional licensures and honorable accolades. These were some of his proudest moments. Throughout his life Gene could be found watching his children’s sporting events and later his grandkids at the tennis courts, golf course, baseball and football fields, basketball courts and wrestling and weightlifting tournaments. He would go on family vacations to New Orleans, the National Parks, Alaska, Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, Oklahoma and New York. On the weekends, if he wasn’t outdoors, he would watch college football and basketball games. Gene was a dedicated husband to his wife Georgia, and for two and a half years of the final three years of his life, he was a constant caregiver to her; not ever leaving her side during a debilitating and medically complicated illness that finally took her to heaven exactly eight months to the day prior to Gene going to heaven. He has been a member of Epiphany Catholic Parrish for over 50 years. He is survived by his children, Gene Schreiber (Joy), Rene Carnes, Lisa Adel (Doug), Brian Schreiber (Kathy), Nine Grandchildren, Kim Moon (Todd), James Schreiber (Emily), Paul Dumstorf, Zachary Dumstorf, Josh Adel, Jeremy Adel (Isabel), Joseph Adel, Cole Schreiber (Jordyn), Wyatt Schreiber and five great-grandchildren, Owen, Ava, Andrew, Easton and Maddox and his brother, Denny Schreiber (Eileen). He is predeceased by his parents, Ned and Lydia Schreiber, his brother Jack Schreiber, and his wife Georgia Mae Schreiber. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, April 6th, 2 pm at Epiphany Catholic Church, 1905 SW Epiphany Court, Lake City, Florida 32025. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in support of Epiphany Catholic School, 1937 SW Epiphany Court, Lake City, Fl 32025.
