Dennis Patrick Carroll

Dennis Patrick Carroll of Cedar Key, Florida died Sunday, July 19, 2015 after a courageous 25 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife Janet of 48 years, sons Mike (Cara), Rob (Brenda), and Tim (Rebecca); three grandchildren (Chris, Nick and Colt); and sister Barbara. He was preceded in death by his brother Barry. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1941 to the late Lieutenant Commander Robert (USN) and Shirlee Carroll. As the son of a US Navy serviceman, he lived on Navy bases throughout the United States and in Cuba. He graduated as Valedictorian from Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland (1959); obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in College Park (1964); and was awarded his Master’s Degree (1965) and PhD (1969) in electrical engineering, with a specialization in power systems, from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He dedicated his life to academics and loved teaching. He started his career at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and then taught at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. He was a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and was Professor Emeritus in Electrical Engineering at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he specialized in electric power systems, high-voltage transmission, HVDC systems, power electronics, motor drives and power system simulation. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He enjoyed watching sports, especially basketball and football, and always cheered for the Boilermakers (Purdue) and Gators (Florida). He enjoyed playing golf with his three sons and was an RC airplane and HO model train enthusiast. He was also an avid boater and fisherman who enjoyed fishing the lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the straits off of the Florida Keys and his beloved Gulf of Mexico. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, July 25 at Cedar Key United Methodist Church (State Road 24 @ 4th St). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cedar Key United Methodist Church (PO Box 338; Cedar Key, FL 32625).
