Louis "Lou" Gutierrez – affectionately known as Louie to his beloved wife Alicia, Dad to his children, and Papa to his grandchildren – passed away peacefully on August 15, 2024, at the age of 87. Lou, a man of faith, empathy, and curiosity, loved his family and community deeply. Born in Buffalo on October 19, 1936, Lou shared a lifelong partnership with his wife of 56 years, Alicia Herrera Gutierrez. He was the loving father of Lisa Gavidia (and her husband Mike Gavidia) and Fred Gutierrez (and his partner Stephanie Brown), who, along with Lou's three grandchildren Steve Mahn (Eileen), Savanna Mahn, and Cameron Mahn and his two great-grandchildren, Julian Mahn and Arthur Mahn, were the pride and joy of his life. Lou was the youngest of five children, and the only brother to four doting sisters: Gloria, Mary, Helen, and Barbara. He was the cherished son of Louis Gutierrez and Helen Wilson. An empathetic soul, Lou's heart was as big as his hands were skilled. Lou loved people, and everyone he met became a friend. He and his wife Alicia devoted their careers to nursing, caring for others with the same compassion that Lou carried into every aspect of his life. Lou had a gift for making everyone he met feel seen and heard, always taking the time to chat with strangers, asking questions about their lives and sharing stories about his, and leaving them with a smile. Lou taught his children to be curious about the world, nature, how things are built, and other people’s lives. He loved driving and exploring, a passion he passed on to his children. Lou believed that curiosity was the key to finding beauty in the world, and he encouraged his family to keep their eyes open and to never shy away from a new adventure, even if it meant just driving down an unfamiliar street. Lou had a deep passion for fixing homes, and over the years, he bought and lovingly maintained many. Whether it was painting, electrical work, plumbing, or carpentry, Lou used these projects as opportunities to teach others, sharing his knowledge generously with anyone eager to learn. He was especially proud of helping young people achieve their dreams of homeownership, always ready with advice and encouragement. Those who knew Lou will remember seeing his Australian Shepherd, Possum (perhaps his truest love!), always at his side. With a love for all animals, Lou rescued Possum, who lived to be 19, from under a house in West Virginia while volunteering with the PV Volunteers, a community dear to his heart. A volunteer with PV Volunteers for many summers, Lou took great pride in the work they did together repairing homes and offering hope to those in need. Lou, with his wife Alicia, volunteered faithfully with his Church, and they made themselves available to anyone in need. A trait that endeared him to many, Lou rooted for the underdog. Humility and simplicity were his trademarks, and he took pride in living a life that was rich in what truly mattered—love, kindness, curiosity, and connection. Lou was a man of quiet strength, gentle wisdom, and boundless love. His legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to guide those who were fortunate enough to be touched by his life. The family will hold a vigil and celebration of Lou’s life at Holy Faith Catholic Church, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at 5:00pm, 747 NW 43rd Street in Gainesville, FL. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 21 at 9:30am at Holy Faith Catholic Church with a reception to follow. The burial procession at St. Madeleine’s Memorial Cemetery, 17155 US 441N High Springs, FL, will follow the reception. All who knew and loved Lou are welcome.
