Dear Roy,
I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Josie, someone whom I held in high regard and admired. I vividly recall visiting your home when I came for an interview at ASU, and the warm hospitality extended by both of you. Josie made a profound impact on our lives, enriching them immensely.
Roy, I cannot even begin to fathom the magnitude of your loss and the sorrow you must be feeling at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I hope you find the strength to navigate through this profound loss.
I would like to offer my assistance in any efforts to honor Josie's memory when the time is right. Please keep me informed about any plans in that regard. In the meantime, if there is anything I can do to support you and your family during this tragic period, please don't hesitate to let me know.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Yilma
During her time in Arizona, Josie and I introduced hundreds of university students to the science of microbiology in a shared teaching assignment in which we could make our complementary expertise work. It was a highlight in my career that I oftentimes remember fondly. The assignment was a good one, but getting to know Josie was equally as good. Her intellect, knowledge, personal warmth and generosity are some of the traits I already missed since she and Roy moved to Florida. I also miss someone as a teaching partner with whom I can discuss the current soccer news. While,I will miss all of this a bit more now, I feel fortunate to have shared a stretch my earthly path with Josie's.
I had the immense pleasure of teaching hundreds of young people microbiology together with Josie for many years while she was at Arizona State. It was also an opportunity to get to know her and to bond over education in general, the common goal of teaching the next generation of microbiologists, and, on the side, some serious soccer discussions. I am proud to have been her colleague and friend. Her intellect, warmth, and friendship were already missed as she and Roy left for Florida, and, now, as we know we will miss her even more, we may take comfort in the realization that we were very fortunate to have shared our Earthly paths with Josie.
Josie was many things to many people, but in all her roles she displayed integrity, kindness, intelligence and a strong ethical compass. She was a a wonderful woman.
Roy, I am so sorry for the loss of Josie. Bruce
